Avadim Anachnu…

Today, I still feel like a slave when:
  • getting dressed and still putting on tzitzis and a kippah
  • on the way to work, I meet people asking me where I davven
  • at work, I walk around with a kippah and feel like an idiot
  • I have to be careful nobody sees me when buying my treif lunch
  • my child asks me about Hashem and I need to give an evasive answer
  • leading the Seder for 40 people and not believing the story happened anyway (or at least not the way it is written in the Torah)
  • leading in prayers when I don’t even know if I believe in the concept of a God (at least not the biblical God)
  • I am not supposed to shave on Chol haMoed although I feel it goes against the festive spirit
  • doing bitul chometz (who cares about the damn crumbs anyway?)
Dear fellow undercover kofers, my wish for the holiday season is: This year we are slaves, but next year we shall be free people!

  1. Ha. Timely post.
You can certainly drop the tzitzis!

  2. Be free now! Life is too short for that crap.

  3. Great post! I know how you feel - I went through (and am still dealing with) a lot of what you're writing about. It's hard to break free, but you owe it to yourself and your children. Let's all resolve to follow our hearts this year.

  6. JP. Try not to use any offensive and personal wording, perhaps I may post your comments then.

Until then, just grow up, will you?

  7. I don't censor comments on my blog like that. I wonder why apostates are so afraid of crticism? The truth hurts?

  8. Some people need to be shown where their limits are. Just like little children.

Deleting a comment where you call me a scum bag and a cancer has less to do with censoring criticism and more with common decency.

And, by the way, the truth doesn't hurt. It is quite a breeze of fresh air after so many years of extremist thinking.

  9. (This time, I will leave JP's comment as-is. Just in case he is boasting again about how frum he is. I have my suspicions about it.)

JP: Does your wife know you use such nivul peh?

  10. OMG, what a terrible sin. I guess I'll have to ask to you for advice on my atonement. Shitforbrains.

  11. JP I find it hypocritical you are complaining about your comments not being allowed here when you tirelessly delete comments on your own blog's comment approval only policy.

  12. Shalmo, some of yours are just so long and ridiculous I don't have time. Sorry.

  13. Why don't you let the public judge my comments for themselves?

The last major comment of mine you deleted was where I refuted your nonsensical caricatures of how christian and islamic literature are organized compared to jewish ones. And where I told you your claim that Jews no longer claim prophets is useless, precisely because that is what Chazal did. The rabbis claimed to have great powers given to them by God, to be able to create golems, to have communion with the holy spirit, etc etc; all of which is really just a reimagining of the role of prophets. So to say that Jews are unique because they claim they no longer get prophets is just dumb, when rabbis fill that role. Oh and if the rabbis really did have all those powers, why not use them against the Romans or against the Palestinians or against any of the enemies of Jewry for the last 2000 years?

All you do Jacob is repeat endlessly the falsehood. The same holds true for your claims that Jews gave the world monotheism, ethics, altruism, and the alphabet. Each one has been refuted time and time again, as the world had all 4 of those things long long before there was a Judaism, and the fact that in your Genesis reimagination you admit you believe humankind is 6000 years old tells the rest of us how out to lunch you are.

If you have the truth with you, then by all means don't run away from allowing your opponents from expressing their counter-arguments. And if not then please don't be a hypocrite and demand other people extend you the luxuries you yourself don't extend anyone else.
