So yesterday, during the annual chometz sale (which in my opinion is a ferking joke anyway), I happened to bump into X. X has feverishly tried to convince us to send our oldest child to the haredi institution as opposed to the normal Jewish school we will send him to next year.
Some things he said:
“I know someone that I think you could talk to. His children also went to the haredi school and still found a job”.
I love the way how people use exceptions to prove their point. Especially since these kids happened to be geniuses and probably were able within no time to make up for what they missed.
Note that X is also a working man but he has been rather unsuccessful. Of course none of his children have a decent education and I am sure that if it weren’t for his wife teaching at the other school (!), the child allowance he receives for his army of kids and other tricky shtick he wouldn’t be able to make ends meet at all.
And why the F does he think I have a problem so that he is doing me a favor referring me to someone to speak to anyway?!
“You are playing with neshamos”
I told him we knew some fine people who had their kids in the non-haredi school and turned out fine. Of course he named one or two kids that went OTD and all I could do was secretly being jealous of the bright kids.
“Better a frum shnorrer than a frei bank manager”
Now this part was quite revealing. Here is an admission that staying within the haredi fold is more important than a child’s human dignity!
A poor man is considered to be like a dead man (Nedarim 64b)
Why not just proudly explain to people that for x, y and z reasons you have converted to atheism? Surely for someone so hateful of dishonesty, that would be the only right thing to do? Or maybe you don't because you don't have any good reasons?
ReplyDeleteThere's two things doing what's best for you & your family and doing what's best for the religion. They don't always coincide.
ReplyDeleteBy the way don't worry about what Shalmo said. He wishes he was important enough for me to troll him.
Ksil, what's your plan? Brainwash your kids into believing that they are merely worthless bags of chemicals and the best way to live is to inject themselves with euphoria inducing drugs and then, when that stops working, put a bullet through their brains?

ReplyDeleteAnd what does the gemarah say about atheists..........?
>“I know someone that I think you could talk to. His children also went to the haredi school and still found a job”.
ReplyDeleteNice to see them setting the bar so high.
Have you checked the youth unemployment lately? Getting a job is pretty good.

ReplyDeleteGetting a job is indeed good, and I'm not knocking that or failed attempts to. Making it sound, however, as if the haredi school is a barrier to doing so that has been overcome by one lucky family, might be less of a good advertisement. ("You should come check out my shul. I think there's one family whose kids still believe in TMS, you could try talking to them.")
ReplyDeleteJP always tries to posit an irrational position: namely that the only alternative to validating his chosen lifestyle is: drugs, pornography and a miserable premature death.
ReplyDelete@Undercover Kofer- there's nothing surprising in what you relate. Haredi types often see MO or Centrist hashkafah as no different from hedonism.
JP: Make up your mind: Am I a skeptic or an Atheist? You seem to know these things better than I do.
ReplyDeleteShocked: 1. I am just trying to point out that even according to the Gemara he is taking an extreme position.
ReplyDelete2. What makes you think I am an atheist? Is everyone that doesn't believe in TMS an Atheist? Hullow?!
Skepticism covers a very broad range of beliefs- from atheism through agnosticism, deism, ; and even those who practice Orthodox Judaism assiduously yet struggle with issues of faith. The biggest phonies are those who self-righteously proclaim that all who follow a different path, either outwardly or inwardly, are dooming themselves and their children to promiscuity , pornography and drug addiction;

ReplyDeleteWhatever you are, you're apparently ashamed of it enough to lie to everyone and hide it.
